BUTTONS FOR BREAST CANCER
Some years ago we decided to create an initiative called
the Ribbon of Life. It involved building a 7 foot high, wooden art
piece, shaped like the breast cancer ribbon we’re all so familiar with and we
intended to cover it with approximately 30,000 buttons from people’s clothing.
We put the word out over the internet and buttons started coming in,
one here and one there and we began to believe that we’d never be able
to collect 30,000 buttons.

Then the word spread into the universe and we now have over 300,000 buttons, including buttons from many
celebrities – even one from one of Elvis’s jumpsuits.

This caused us to revise our goal and now we are going to rebuild the art piece to accommodate one million buttons.
Moreover, we began to receive beautiful letters with the buttons, explaining why they were being sent.
One man told us the buttons were selected by his twin sons, ages 7, and were from his late wife’s
wedding dress. These letters are so powerful that we will ultimately be selecting 100 of them
and producing a book showing those letters and the buttons that came with them.

This is the kind of initiative that’s easy and fun and anyone can participate. It’s great for
individuals, Boy and Girl Scout troops, elementary, junior and senior high schools and
even fraternal organizations like the Rotary and Elks. If you’d like to help us reach our
goal and have a lot of fun in the process, go through your sewing box and pull out
the cushions on that old couch. You’ll be amazed at what you’ll find.
